Frequently Asked Questions
What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
GEO is the practice of optimizing web content to be accurately cited and referenced by AI search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overview, and Claude. It focuses on structured data, content clarity, and AI-readable formatting.
How is GEO different from traditional SEO?
Traditional SEO optimizes for ranking in search engine result pages. GEO optimizes for being cited in AI-generated responses. GEO focuses on definition-style content, structured data, source attribution, and llms.txt — factors that help AI understand and cite your content.
What is a good GEO score?
The checker rates 80 or above as Excellent, 60–79 as Good, 40–59 as Fair, and below 40 as Needs Work. The overall score weights four areas: AI readability (25%), citation potential (25%), content structure (20%) and technical GEO (30%).
What does the GEO checker look at?
It runs 21 checks across those four areas, including llms.txt, structured data, Open Graph tags, definition-style opening content, statistics and source citations, author bylines, a single H1 and a clean heading hierarchy, FAQ schema, robots.txt access for AI crawlers, the meta description, the canonical URL and the mobile viewport.
Does the checker see content rendered by JavaScript?
No. It reads the HTML your server returns, without running JavaScript, which is also how many AI crawlers read pages. If your key content only appears after JavaScript runs, AI tools may not see it either.
How can I improve my GEO score?
Start with the issues listed in your results. Common fixes are adding an llms.txt file, adding structured data such as Organization, Article or FAQ, opening pages with a clear one-sentence definition, citing sources for statistics, adding author bylines, and making sure robots.txt does not block AI crawlers.
What happens to the URL I check?
We store the URL you check and its scores, and log basic usage data (a hashed, non-reversible form of your IP address and the referring page) to prevent abuse and improve the tool. If you request the full report, we also store your email address and send your results to our AI provider to write the recommendations. See our privacy policy for details.
